They were on their third mug of chocolate when the café staff began to put the chairs up on the tables and mop the floor. They stared at Dinah and Ingrid, working their way closer and closer to where they were sitting.

‘We’d better go before they throw us out,’ Dinah said. ‘The others will be out in half an hour anyway.’

‘Ready to be covered in golden syrup.’ Ingrid pulled a face. ‘I hope they think of something better to bring next week.’

There was someone by their table now, tapping her foot impatiently. Dinah stood up. ‘Come on.’

But Ingrid was still thinking. ‘Who decides what people have to bring, anyway? And how does everyone find out?’

Dinah wasn’t really listening. ‘It’s probably just one of those things,’ she said vaguely. ‘Now hurry up, before they throw us out.’

‘But—’

‘No, come on!’ Dinah put a hand in between Ingrid’s shoulder blades and pushed her into the rotating door. ‘Let’s go and find the others.’ She hardly noticed that Ingrid was still talking.

‘ … and do you think they get people to bring the same thing to all the Purple clubs … ?’
